Purpose: to encourage the use of firearms for hunting and other shooting sports and to oppose restrictions on the right to own guns
Members: 2,524,000
The National Rifle Association promotes the use of firearms for sport. It also supports gun collecting and encourages firearm safety. The NRA opposes gun control, basing its arguments on the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which establishes “the right of the people to keep and bear arms.” The organization lobbies Congress to oppose the passage of major gun control legislation and supports political candidates who share their views. The NRA publishes three magazines—American Hunter, American Rifleman, and InSights.
